William McKinney

William “Bill” P. McKinney, age 68, a 13-year resident of Curlew, passed away on Nov. 11, 2013 at his daughter’s home in Colville after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was born on Nov. 9, 1945 in El Dorado, KS, the son of Lawrence George and Rose Guida (McKinney) Anderson.Bill began his education in El Dorado, and then moved with his family to Dallas, TX, where he attended Thomas Jefferson High School. He received his diploma from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1965 and then attended Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA. On Sept. 27, 1966, Bill was in¬ducted into the U.S. Army. He trained at Fort Hood, TX with the First Armored Division, A, TRP, First Platoon, American Division. In acknowledgement of heroism and personal sacrifice while in Vietnam, Bill received the Silver Star for gallantry in action against a hostile force, Bronze Star for heroism and a Purple Heart cluster for his sacrifices. Bill was honorably discharged on Aug. 5, 1968 and returned to Costa Mesa. There he met, Marjorie Anne Happel and they were wed on Dec. 21, 1969. They began a family with the births of their daugh¬ters, Shawnie and Jackie. Traveling in response to work opportunities, Bill and his family resided in several communities throughout the states of California, Washington, Oregon, Colo¬rado and Kansas. Bill retired in Oceanside, CA after 17 years with the U.S. Postal Service. In 2000 he then relocated to Curlew, where he has resided and enjoyed retirement. He left a legacy of memories within the hearts of his family. Those memories characterized a man described as “awesome” with an unparalleled love for his family. His kindness, generosity, honesty, and thoughtfulness shared to with those whom he encountered. He gave of himself in service to others, often hid¬ing his own concerns in protection of those who loved him dearly. Without reserve, his granddaughters summed up his life in three words simply put, “the best grandpa”.Bill is survived by his daughters, Shawnie Zink and her husband, David, Colville; Jackie Wood, Albuquerque, NM; granddaughters, Kylie and Taylor Zink, Colville; brother, Michael L. McKinney, Oregon; sister, Janice Fitzhugh, California; fraternal aunt, Mary K. Fleming, Albuquerque; three nieces and a nephew. A family visitation and memorial gathering was held in celebration of life for Mr. William “Bill” P. McKinney. Memorial contributions may be given to the Hospice of Spokane. He will be laid to rest with his family at the St. James Calvary Cemetery in Augusta, KS. Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Colville, was entrusted with the arrangements.
