The postseason came to an end for both Chewelah basketball teams Saturday, Feb. 14, at West Valley High School, as the Cougars dropped a pair of loser-out contests.
In the girls' matchup, Chewelah (2-21 overall, 0-13 Northeast 2B North) fell to St. George’s 60-19. The Dragons used a fast start to seize control, building a 16-2 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 30-8 by halftime.
St. George’s continued to pour it on in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 18-4 to put the game out of reach. Brystal Neilsen led all scorers with 28 points for the Dragons, who finished with four 3-pointers and shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Chewelah finished with seven field goals and converted just 2-of-11 attempts at the line. Kayla Davis led the Cougars with six points, including two 3-pointers.
The Cougars committed just seven fouls in the contest, while St. George’s team was whistled for 15. With the loss, Chewelah’s season came to a close, while St. George’s advanced to face Lind-Ritzville/Sprague in another loser-out matchup.
That same day, the Chewelah boys saw their season end in a 63-54 loss to Asotin in a District 6 2B elimination game. No details of the game were available at press time.
The Panthers (7-11) held off the Cougars (11-12, 4-8) to advance in the bracket while Chewelah concluded its year with the program's most wins since 2019-2020.
