

Chewelah Basketball Highlights Players Despite Multiple Losses

Chewelah boys split home games after road loss at Reardan; girls drop three. Chewelah girls continue to battle through a difficult early-season stretch.
The Chewelah boys basketball team closed out a busy week with a split of two home games following a road loss to league-leading Reardan, leaving the Cougars at 4-3 overall and 1-2 in Northeast 2B North play.
Chewelah opened the stretch on Dec. 16, with a 70-45 loss at Reardan. The Screaming Eagles built an early advantage and maintained control throughout the league matchup. The Cougars were led by Ryen McMillin, Grady Skok and Blake Schlining, who each scored nine points.
The Cougars rebounded Friday night, Dec. 19, with a 52-29 home win over Newport. Chewelah set the tone early, jumping out to a 14-4 first-quarter lead and extending the margin to 32-10 by halftime. McMillin and Asher Stancil each scored 14 points to lead the Cougars, while Sety chipped in 10.
Chewelah returned to the court Dec. 20, but came up short in a 61-52 loss to Liberty Bell. The Cougars stayed within reach throughout the contest but were unable to overcome Liberty Bell’s perimeter shooting, as the visitors hit nine three-pointers. McMillin paced Chewelah with 14 points, while Skok added 13 and Stancil finished with six points.
The boys' team is scheduled to host Mary Walker on Saturday, Dec. 27, at 6 p.m.
The Chewelah girls' basketball team dropped three games against league and nonleague opponents.
Chewelah most recently fell 65-32 at home to Liberty Bell on Dec. 20. The visiting Mountain Lions built an early lead and maintained control throughout the nonleague contest. Chewelah was unable to find consistent offense, finishing without a made 3-pointer. Sara Vioni led the Cougars with 11 points.
One night earlier, Chewelah dropped a 39-30 Northeast 2B North loss to Newport. The Cougars stayed competitive but were unable to overcome the Grizzlies. Jessika Davis led Chewelah with 12 points, including two 3-pointers.
The week began with a road loss at Reardan on Dec. 16, where Chewelah fell 61-7 to the Screaming Eagles.
The girls' team is scheduled to host Mary Walker on Saturday, Dec. 27, at 4:30 p.m.
