The Chewelah Cougars baseball team is off to a strong start this spring, improving to 4-1 on the season after a dominant week that included a sweep of Kettle Falls.

Chewelah opened the stretch with a 16-5 victory over Kettle Falls on March 25, using a balanced offensive attack to take control. The Cougars piled up nine hits and 16 runs, with Blake Schlining leading the way with four RBIs. Makia Masuda added a home run and two RBIs, while Gus Schatz drove in three runs off two hits. Chewelah’s patience at the plate also paid off, drawing 10 walks to keep pressure on the Bulldogs’ pitching staff.

On the mound, Ethan Johnson earned the win, going four innings with five strikeouts, while Schatz closed the game with three scoreless innings.

The Cougars carried that momentum into Saturday’s doubleheader against Kettle Falls, sweeping both games in convincing fashion. In the opener, Chewelah rolled to a 14-4 win behind a strong all-around performance. Ryan McMillin led the offense with two hits, a double, and two RBIs, while Dakota Katzer drove in two runs off two hits, Masuda had a multi-hit, multi-RBI game. Chewelah again capitalized on walks and aggressive baserunning, finishing with 14 runs on nine hits. McMillin also earned the win on the mound, tossing six innings while allowing just three hits and striking out nine.

Chewelah completed the sweep with a 13-0 shutout in the second game, dominating from start to finish. The Cougars scored in the first four innings, highlighted by a six-run fourth that broke the game open. Schatz delivered a big performance with four RBIs, while Masuda and Noah Ross each had multi-hit games.

On the mound, Grady Skok was in control throughout, throwing a complete-game one-hitter while striking out four to secure the shutout.
