Chewelah’s wrestling team picked up a narrow 30-23 win over Asotin Panthers on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Northeast 2B Duals in Davenport.

The dual came down to bonus points and key pins, with Chewelah wrestlers doing just enough to pull out the victory despite several open weight classes on both sides.

Chewelah jumped out early with a forfeit win by Taseyn Stauffer at 106 pounds, then added another six points at 132 pounds as Trevin Stauffer also won by forfeit. After Asotin answered with a trio of wins in the middle weights, the Warriors swung momentum back in their favor with back-to-back falls.

Titan Tapia pinned Carson Reedy at 157 pounds in 1 minute, 47 seconds, and Dakota Katzer followed with a lightning-fast fall over Cooper Sumpter at 165 in just 44 seconds. The two pins proved decisive in the tightly contested dual.

Asotin picked up additional points at 138, 144, and 150 pounds, including a 30-second pin by Buckminster Aiken and a technical fall from Cannon Shubert, keeping the Panthers within striking distance entering the heavyweight bout.

Wyatt Gould sealed the team win for Chewelah at 285 pounds, earning a fall over Kyron Clovis at 4:46 to push the Warriors past the 30-point mark.

Multiple double forfeits at 113, 120, 126, 19,0 and 215 pounds reflected the short-handed lineups common at the duals, but Chewelah’s ability to capitalize when matches were contested made the difference.
