Cougars Fall to Asotin and Colfax at Districts But Advance to Face Napavine at State

Chewelah’s baseball team dropped two games in the District 6 tournament last week, but the Cougars’ season will continue in the Class 2B state tournament. Chewelah, now 15-7 on the season, will face 2B District 4 champion Napavine this week in the opening round of the state tournament. The Cougars opened district play Wednesday, May 13, with a tight 2-1 loss to Asotin. Chewelah then fell 14-5 to Colfax later that day. Against Asotin, Chewelah managed just two hits but stayed within striking distance behind a strong start from Grady Skok. Skok pitched all six innings for the Cougars, allowing two runs on three hits while walking four and striking out seven. Asotin scored a run in the first inning and another in the fourth. Chewelah scored its lone run in the seventh but could not complete the comeback. Patrick McGuire went 1-for3 and drove in Chewelah’s run. Noah Ross added the Cougars’ other hit, a double, and Ethan Johnson scored Chewelah’s run. Asotin’s Cody Ells earned the win, throwing all seven innings and holding Chewelah to one run on two hits. He walked two and struck out 15. Chewelah’s bats found more offense against Colfax, but the Bulldogs broke the game open late. The Cougars scored four runs in the first inning and added another in the fifth, but Colfax answered with 14 runs on 16 hits. Colfax scored one run in the first inning, one in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, and seven in the sixth. Gus Schatz led Chewelah at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two triples, three RBIs, and a run scored. Makai Masuda went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while McGuire, Kingston Duffie, and Johnson each added a hit. Ross drove in a run for the Cougars. Ryen McMillin started on the mound for Chewelah, allowing six runs, two earned, on nine hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out six. Schatz and McGuire also pitched in relief.
