Chewelah Head Coach Ronnie Turner said the Cougars softball team is focused not only on winning games this year, but also on how they represent themselves on the field.

“Expectation is to be a competitive team this year that wins and loses with great sportsmanship,” Turner said.

Chewelah brings solid numbers into the spring, with 11 varsity players and seven junior varsity athletes. Turner said the varsity roster features a nearly even split of experience and youth, with five upperclassmen and six underclassmen.

Leadership will come from a group effort, though two players are expected to set the tone on both sides of the ball.

“We have a whole team of leaders but those two will stand out,” Turner said. “Nicole Turner and Isabella Turner will lead the team with the bat and defense as Nicole is the starting catcher for Isabella.”

The Cougars’ season will be built around cohesion and resilience.

“Our strengths are playing as a team, grit, determination, and our offense should be pretty solid,” Turner said.

League play is expected to present its usual challenges, with several familiar programs returning strong lineups.

“League looks pretty competitive like always. NWC (Northwest Christian) and Kettle Falls should be pretty tough opponents this year but expect all games to be pretty competitive,” Turner said.

Despite the challenges ahead, Turner said he is excited about the group and the way they’ve come together early in the season.

“I’m really excited to see this group of girls play this year. It makes it fun as a coach when you have a team that plays together like this group does,” he said.
