Colville Tennis Splits Matches with Newport, Chewelah in Busy Week

The Colville girls tennis team picked up an early nonleague win while also battling rival Chewelah in a pair of competitive early-season matchups last week.

The Crimson Hawks closed the stretch on a high note Friday, March 20, defeating Newport 3-2 behind a dominant showing in singles play.

Senior Julia Baker led the way at number-one singles with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory, while senior Megan Long added a straight-sets win at number-two singles, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Jasmine Wolfe impressed in her singles debut, rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 win at number-three singles to secure the team victory.

Colville also found success in doubles, where senior Evie McDaniel and junior Cora Coller earned a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Earlier in the week, Colville opened its home schedule against Chewelah in a tightly contested dual that the Cougars edged 3-2.

Chewelah’s Simi Sahota set the tone with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Baker at number-one singles, while the Cougars’ top doubles team of Cora Grooms and Emily Howder defeated Colville’s Kylee Dyar and Ava Kelley 6-2, 6-2.

Despite the loss, the Crimson Hawks saw strong performances throughout the lineup. Campbell Thompson and Lilly Hirsch picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while McDaniel and Wolfe added another doubles victory with a 6-2, 6-1 result at number-three.

Colville also pushed Chewelah in several close matches. Long battled at number-two singles before falling 3-6, 4-6, Dyar and Kelley were competitive against Chewelah’s top doubles team, taking four games.

On the boys side in the season opener, sophomore Jack Shaw competed at number-one singles and took four games against Chewelah’s top player.

Colville also showed competitiveness in doubles play against Newport, with Charlie Herb and James Stewart taking four games off Newport’s number-one team, while Dyar and Kelley and the duo of Thompson and Hirsch each took three games.
