The local Forestry Competition, hosted by Stevens County Conservation District (SCCD) with the help of many local industry, agency, and individual volunteers, was held on April 2 at Douglas Falls Grange Park outside of Colville. According to SCCD, over 70 students from nine eastern Washington schools and Future Farmers of America chapters competed against one another, both as teams and at the individual level, challenging their practical forestry knowledge and skills. Teams were composed of four to five members and students were tested in: General Knowledge, Chainsaw Operation & Parts, Compass & Pacing, Maps, Tree ID, Tree Disorders, Tool ID, and Timber Cruising. At the end of the day, a Wenatchee team placed first overall, while Colville teams took second and third places. On the individual level, Jaymon Mulder from Colville placed first, followed by Trenton Huntington and John Gutzwiler, both from Wenatchee.
SCCD highlighted Columbia Cedar, Ron Henteges Logging, Manulife, Boise Cascade, Rich Richmond Logging, Vaagen’s Timber, and Arden Tree Farms for their financial contributions that provided contest supplies, awards, and lunch from Mr. Sub.
