

Cougars Baseball Rolls Through Busy Week, Improve to 8-2 on Season

The Chewelah Cougars baseball team continued its strong start to the season, winning four of five games last week to improve to 8-2 overall.
Chewelah opened the week with an 11-1 win over Davenport on March 31, piling up 13 hits in the victory. Patrick McGuire led the way with three hits and three runs, while Noah Ross added three hits and two RBIs. Ryen McMillin drove in two runs, and Makai Masuda chipped in a pair of hits and an RBI. On the mound, Dakota Katzer and Gus Schatz combined to allow just one run while striking out 11.
The Cougars stayed hot on April 3 with back-to-back wins over Davenport, first shutting them out 11-0 before erupting for an 18-7 victory later in the day. In the shutout, Ethan Johnson tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits while striking out 13. Offensively, McGuire scored four runs while driving in a run of his, Masuda drove in four and hit a double, and McMillin added two hits and two RBIs. In the second game, Chewelah’s bats stayed hot with 18 runs on 18 hits, led by McGuire’s three-hit, two-double performance and Ross’ four RBIs. Schatz added two hits and three RBI with a triple.
Chewelah’s lone setback came against Liberty Bell on April 4, falling 5-2 despite limiting the Mountain Lions to nine hits. McGuire and Masuda each recorded hits, while Schatz drove in a run. McMillin took the loss on the mound, allowing three earned runs over six innings and striking out five.
The Cougars rebounded later that day with an 18-0 rout of Warden, dominating from start to finish. McGuire had three hits and five RBI from the leadoff spot, while Ross had two hits and two RBI. Masuda also had two hits and three RBI. Schatz earned the win on the mound with five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six. Schatz also recorded a double and two RBI in the matchup.
