Chewelah overwhelmed Reardan on both sides of the ball, extending its unbeaten league start with three lopsided wins and two more shutouts.
Chewelah kept rolling in Northeast 2B League play last week, sweeping three games from Reardan by a combined 39-2 to improve to 12-2 overall and 9-0 in league play.
The Cougars opened the stretch with a 13-0 win over the Screaming Eagles on April 14, then completed a doubleheader sweep Friday, April 17, with 17-2 and 9-0 victories.
Chewelah set the tone early in the first meeting, scoring in every inning of a five-inning mercy-rule win. Patrick McGuire sparked the offense by scoring four runs and collecting two hits, while Kingston Duffie drove in two runs, and Noah Ross and Makia Masuda each added an RBI. The Cougars finished with six hits and drew 11 walks.
Ryen McMillin was dominant on the mound in that opener, throwing a one-hit shutout over five innings. He struck out seven and walked two as Reardan never found any offensive rhythm.
The Cougars stayed aggressive in Friday’s first game, erupting for eight hits in a 17-2 win. Chewelah scored twice in the first inning, four times in the second, then broke things open with eight runs in the fourth.
Grady Skok scored three runs, hit a double and drove in two, McMillin had two hits, a double, and two RBIs as did Makia Masuda. Blake Schlining also drove in two runs.
McMillin again handled the pitching duties, allowing three hits and one earned run over five innings while striking out four.
Chewelah finished the sweep with a 9-0 shutout in the second game Friday, using a balanced attack and another strong effort on the mound. Masuda led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs. Gus Schatz added a home run and drove in two, while Skok and Ethan Johnson also had hits.
On the mound, Schatz worked the first two innings, allowing one hit while striking out four. Skok took over from there and threw four, no-hit innings with five strikeouts as the Cougars combined on the one-hit shutout.
