Two-day Event Waives License Requirements For Most Game Fish, With Stevens County Lakes Stocked For Trout and Kokanee Anglers

Local anglers can participate in the state’s annual Free Fishing Weekend, June 6-7, allowing residents to fish many area waters without needing to purchase a license. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) highlighted Stevens County as a prime destination for the event, particularly for those targeting rainbow trout and kokanee. The department’s 2026 stocking plan includes local waters such as Cedar, Mudgett, Rocky, Starvation, and Waitts lakes, which are among those recently stocked with millions of catchable-size fish, WDFW officials said. During the two-day event, officials said license requirements are waived for most game fish, and visitors will not need a Discover Pass to park at WDFW-managed water access sites or nearby state parks. However, specific rules remain in place for certain species. A valid license and catch record card are still mandatory for anyone fishing for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, or halibut. Local officials encourage participants to use the “Fish Washington” mobile app to check specific regulations for area waters before heading out. According to officials, all permanent rules, including daily limits, size restrictions, and gear requirements, will be strictly enforced despite the license waiver. “Free Fishing Weekend gives people an easy entry point into fishing,” said Kirt Hughes, WDFW fish management division manager. “You don’t need to be an expert or own a boat to get started. There are lakes, shorelines, and fishing piers across the state where people can get out and give it a try.” Anglers at these locations can also participate in the ongoing WDFW Trout Derby. Officials said tagged fish have been placed in over 100 lakes statewide, including local favorites, with prizes ranging from gift cards to fishing gear available for those who land a trout with a green tag through October 31.
