Hawks Stretch Northwest Christian to Four Games

Colville gave defending State 2B champion Northwest Christian a much tougher fight than a year ago Wednesday night, taking a set before falling 25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17 in a nonleague matchup. “The returning state champions, NWC, will be a strong team again this year, but Colville competed right alongside them,” Colville Head Coach Michawn Vining said. “It was such a fun game to coach because we started to see all of the skills we have been working on come together and flow on the court.”

The 1A Crimson Hawks, who were swept by NWC last season, broke through in the third set with a 25- 23 win. “The girls played hard, and we had a couple of athletes who either didn’t have enough practices under their belts yet or are coming back from injury,” Vining said. “Several JV players swung up to help out, and they played really well.”

Taya Kinney was strong at the net for the Hawks with 6 blocks, while Katie Roy had 2 aces and 27 assists. Aubree Kubesh recorded seven kills and Emily Danekas posted 12 digs. “Katie Roy stood out as an all-around player, showing great court awareness and leadership throughout the match,” Vining said. “Taya Kinney embraced her new role as a middle hitter/blocker and played with a lot of heart and determination.”

Northwest Christian opened its season 1-0 behind Polly Getman’s 15 kills and six digs. Chlarice Carey added 19 assists and six aces for the defending 2B state champions. “There is still plenty for us to work on, but seeing the girls compete the way they did against a strong NWC team was really encouraging,” Vining said. “I truly believe we are going to have a really fun season!”
