The Statesman-Examiner has welcomed Harmony Perisse to the newsroom, where she has already begun sharing the stories of people throughout the community. For Perisse, writing has always been a passion.
While she has enjoyed writing for as long as she can remember, she said her love for creative writing truly blossomed in college. As someone who describes herself as an introvert, Perisse said, “Writing is a form of expression where I can cross boundaries, explore new paths, discover new ideas and find new ways of thinking.”
Originally from Olympia, Wash., Perisse most recently lived in Yelm before moving to Colville in the summer of 2025 to be closer to family. After the unexpected loss of her mother, she said she realized how important it is to cherish time with loved ones.
A 2024 college graduate, Perisse said she was searching for her next step after being laid off from her job. Looking for a meaningful career, she returned to something that had always brought her joy – writing. “I remembered that I could always go back to something I loved,” she said. “I want to make a difference.”
Although journalism was new to her, Perisse said joining the Statesman-Examiner has been an inspiring experience. Learning how to interview people, write news stories, and work through the editing process has given her a greater appreciation for community journalism and the important role local newspapers play.
She added that one of her favorite parts of the job has been getting to know the people she interviews.”Everyone has a story to tell, and I feel honored that I have been given that opportunity,” she said. Perisse also appreciates the support she has received from the Statesman-Examiner staff. “Everyone has been helpful and welcoming,” she said. “Their support has allowed me to experience what this profession looks like and has given me a better understanding of what makes journalism an important part of a community.”
When she isn’t writing, Perisse said she enjoys singing with the Kettle Falls Choir, where she performs alongside her aunt and grandmother. She also enjoys reading, creating artwork, and cooking. As she continues her journey with the Statesman-Examiner, Perisse said she hopes readers remember that it’s never too early or too late to pursue a dream. “Believe in yourself,” she said. “You are good enough. Never stop trying.”
