Local Candidates Have Filed For Midterm Elections

Primary and General Election Dates

Several positions are up for election in Stevens and Ferry counties in the Aug. 4 primary races. Candidate filing closed May 8, with multiple candidates running for the same position, while many others will be running unopposed. According to the state elections office, Congressman Michael Baumgartner, R-Spokane, will face 11 opponents for the Congressional District 5 representative race; six of which are Democratic and five Independent. Legislative District 7 State Senator Shelly Short, R-Addy, will also face competition; one opponent is running as an Independent while the other two are running as Republican. Meanwhile, Legislative District 7 representatives Andrew Engell, R-Colville, and Hunter Abell, R-Inchelium, are both running unopposed. Out of the 29 positions up for election, 13 are running unopposed and five will automatically advance to the general election in November.
