Colville High School teacher Tracey Delyea announced on March 13 that she received the honor of having her photograph on board the U.S. Navy’s newest nuclear submarine, the USS Idaho. According to Delyea, the USS Idaho commissioning committee sought images that captured Idaho’s landscape, culture, and wildlife for the interior of the submarine. The photo contest received 2,325 images from 413 photographers, Delyea said, adding that she was invited to the commissioning of the USS Idaho on April 25 in Groton, Conn., but will not be able to attend. She said her winning image was captured using her iPhone with limited editing. Delyea is the Career and Technical Education art instructor and advises the on-campus photography club. “I often encourage my students to photograph what they love with what they have,” said Delyea. “This image does just that, as I took it on my phone at a place I love. It is a true honor to be onboard supporting our service members.” Her winning shot is of Beauty Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Delyea said it is just off the highway on the way to her multi-generation family cabin in north Idaho.
