New business Vixen Design Company opened its doors on Main Street in Colville on Friday, April 10, selling custom decals, banners, signs, original creations, and much more.
“We can design a product for pretty much anything a customer asks for,” said Katie Fox, who owns the business along with her husband, Martin Fox. “We can design a decal based on an idea in your own imagination and put it on a cup or decal. Or you can come in with an idea for a bag or an article of clothing, and I can design it.”
Fox said she can create what people ask for, “whether it’s to go on one item or 40.” All of the work is completed by Fox alone on-site at the store.
“My husband does the hanging and cutting, as well as the manual labor. I do all of the creating and designing. I’ve been doing this kind of creative work on the side for years. When my husband drove a log truck, I designed the decals for the truck doors.”
Fox said friends would approach her, asking if she could do certain projects and designs that they saw on Etsy. She said she discovered that her creative abilities enabled her to design virtually any crafty item found in the online shop.
After working at Walmart for 11 years, Fox said she wanted to free up time to spend with family. She has been operating her business out of her home for the past six years, and got her business license in October 2025. But aside from not wanting to work out of the house, Fox believes that having a physical store location with foot traffic will help to bolster the business.
“I like the versatility that my design business will have operating out of the retail store,” Fox said. “If custom banners aren’t selling this week, then I can focus on door hangers or log truck decals or any number of things. I don’t have to worry about selling just one type of thing.”
Fox said she plans on running her business as a one-woman-show, with no staff members other than herself.
“I can do it all,” she said. “I just did 29 glass cans for the Northport school in two days. Right now, I have openings for new orders, but I’m a solid three days out.”
She said the timeframe for custom orders depends on the size of the order and type of design. It also depends on the quality of the image, whether the customer designed it, or whether it was AI (artificial intelligence) generated.
“AI is the worst thing to work with,” Fox said. “It’s great if a customer has no idea what to start with when designing an image. But AI images are pixelated, and I have to fill in the layers. They also take more time. So, I charge more for AI-generated images.”
Vixen Design Company does not offer a price sheet, “because every order is unique,” Fox said.
“All orders are custom made. For example, stickers vary in size, ink type, whether the background is clear, etc. We do offer starting price ranges. One example is our banners, which start out at $4.00 per square foot for black and $5.00 per square foot for color.”
Fox said that she tries to keep her prices in line with the standard prices in town. However, she always tries to beat Etsy’s prices. “So far, I’ve been able to do that!”
The retail shop is stocked with select items for walk-in purchase right away. There are a variety of items in the store ready to purchase.
“I picked the name Vixen while shopping with my daughter-in-law,” Fox said. “I thought about calling the store Fox Family Designs, but that just didn’t have a good ring to it. My daughter-in-law suggested Vixen, which is the name of a female fox.”
Vixen Design Company held a soft opening on April 10. “It was meant to get the kinks out and make sure that the card readers worked properly,” said Fox. “It was mostly family and friends, checking the procedure for taking multiple orders was efficient, etc.
“Our grand opening will be Monday, April 13th. There won’t be any special sales. I’m not looking for a big kaboom. I just want to open for business.”
