A look back at Colville history: Stagecoach franchise hearings in 1926; tax protests and road openings in 1951; sweepstakes parade wins in 1976; and the rebuilding of the city street shop in 2016.
100 Years Ago (1926) Two applications for stage transportation franchises were heard at the council room. The Colville-Spokane Stage Line presented a petition for extension of service between Colville and Kettle Falls. Also, the senior class play, “Adam and Eve,” is set for Friday night at the Colville Theater.
75 Years Ago (1951) County Treasurer Chester Hills revealed that real estate sellers have been paying the new 1% tax under protest, totaling nearly $300 so far. Meanwhile, the Boulder Creek Road to Republic is expected to open within 10 days after being closed all spring due to slides.
50 Years Ago (1976) The Colville Float took the Sweepstakes prize in the Lilac Festival Parade in Spokane. Locally, Gary Douvia has taken ownership of the Chevrolet-Buick dealership, and the city is preparing for the arrival of a new $74,000 fire truck being picked up in New York.
25 Years Ago (2001) Gloria Cooper, CEO of Mt. Carmel Hospital, will be honored at the hospital foundation's 7th annual golf tournament. Additionally, the Arden Old Timers Rodeo is set to debut its new announcer's booth, built by local volunteers.
10 Years Ago (2016) Nearly a year after a devastating fire destroyed millions of dollars worth of street equipment, the city of Colville has begun construction on a new and improved street shop on North Lincoln Street.
