Many gardeners seek innovative techniques for growing tomatoes. One highly effective method that might seem counterintuitive is the “Japanese tomato ring” method where tomatoes are grown outside a cage instead of inside. This technique is neither new nor Japanese.


Originating in the 1960s, its name may stem from a miscommunication between its South Carolina inventor and a reporter discussing his World War II experiences in Japan. A Japanese tomato ring consists of four tomato plants planted around the perimeter of a large, central cylinder or cage filled with organic matter, such as compost and shredded leaves. The plants are primarily watered through this central cage, allowing hydration to mix with the rich nutrients in the organic material and encouraging roots to stretch towards it.


Anecdotally, users have raved about the large size, quantity, heartiness, sweetness, and superb flavor of tomatoes grown using this method. Some growers even report success with other vegetables. While no specific scientific studies have validated the Japanese tomato ring, research does support its individual core components.


According to Washington State University Master Gardeners, soil amendment with compost is proven to dramatically increase tomato yield, as is localized placement of water and nutrients for maximum uptake. Let’s explore how these processes are implemented in the Japanese tomato ring.


Over the years, gardeners have adapted the technique in both container design and the organic “recipe” it holds. While a standard tomato cage could work, its openings can be too large to retain compost. Growers may purchase tighter wire mesh cages or line existing cages with burlap, chicken wire, or hardware cloth. Some choose to construct their own “compost bin” cylinders; Kentucky Living profiled a gardener who formed one using farm fencing.


A typical cage size is about 3-4 feet in diameter and up to 6 feet tall, though 3 feet is standard. Master Gardeners recommend positioning the cage in a location that receives full sunlight. Layer the contents: a standard “recipe” alternates 6 inches of compost with 6 inches of shredded leaves until the pile reaches 2.5 feet tall.


Gardeners might incorporate humus (especially without compost), mulch, or topsoil. Creating a small indentation at the top for granular fertilizer and repeating application every few weeks – following all product instructions for healthy tomato growth – can optimize growth. Once filled, Master Gardeners suggest watering the central pile thoroughly before planting. Space four healthy tomato plants evenly around the perimeter of the cage, placing them about 2 inches away from the wire. Add any desired soil amendments to each planting hole and finish with a layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture.


As the original organic matter decomposes throughout the season, continue to add fresh compost to the top of the cage. Water the plants by watering through the central cage to help the internal composting materials remain consistently moist and provide a steady supply of nutrient-rich water. Once established, all that remains is to enjoy your abundant harvest.
