Remembering Inchelium Elder Arnold “Judge” Wynecoop

The Inchelium Cultural Research Center announced the passing of Arnold “Judge” Wynecoop, a Sinixt and Spokane elder remembered for his connection to his homelands, family traditions, and role in the organization’s formation.

In a June 16 press release, the Inchelium Cultural Research Center (ICRC) described Wynecoop as “a Sinixt and Spokane man who was dear to our hearts and our nonprofit organization.” Wynecoop and his wife, Tina, participated in the formation of the ICRC, and he served early on as an honorary member of the organization’s Board of Directors.

The release said Wynecoop’s close ties with ICRC founders Mary Kaye Hale and Nancy Michel, along with family and community connections including Shadow Top, Able One, Ellen Edwards Perkins, John Curtis Wynecoop, Nancy Perkins Wynecoop, Etue’s, Desautel’s, and Galbraith’s, connected him “to our vast homelands and to so many of our families.” The organization remembered Wynecoop for his love of the outdoors and the traditions he shared with family and friends.

“His life is worthy of many reflections and stories; we admire his love of the homelands of his people and their many gifts,” the release stated. According to ICRC, flyfishing, gathering firewood, and hunting for Christmas trees were among Wynecoop’s valued family traditions. The release also noted that Judge and Tina’s huckleberry seasons lasted throughout the summer, with the couple welcoming many people to their “favorite family patches” and providing jams, pies, and gifts over the years.

“He taught us through his love of the woods, mountains, and streams the importance of tradition, family, storytelling, and friendship,” the release stated. Memorial service details have not yet been announced.

The ICRC said the date, time, and location are being planned during the upcoming huckleberry season, “in the true spirit of Judge.
