Kit Shultz loved the outdoors. The only son of Ronald and Marian (Gifford) Shultz was born in Seattle on April 1, 1940. His first years were spent on the Twisp ranch of his maternal grandparents where he became familiar with the various animals there. After the war, his family moved to West Seattle where he grew up. He was active in scouting, hiking sections of the Pacific Crest Trail and around Mt. Rainier, pursuing merit badges, and becoming an Eagle Scout. Kit loved music and became a trombonist, eventually becoming a member of the WSU and the National Guard’s 41st Infantry marching bands. He received his B.A. in History from the University of Washington in 1964, then a Masters from the University of Arizona in 1968, and finally his PhD from Emory in 1977. He wrote his dissertation on late medieval French art history and patronage. Most of his career was spent teaching. On a trip to Europe in 1960, he met Janet Moser and four years later the two were married in Coral Gables, Florida, her hometown. They spent 52 years together before she passed on. They had no children. Being an avid whitewater rafter enabled Kit to explore various places around the state to settle, but it was on a driving trip with Janet they discovered the beautiful Colville area, and in 1999 acquired a lovely old farm near Rice. It became their “Candlewood”, and many years were spent landscaping and improving it. It was in Colville, Kit again found love, marrying Sherron Park in 2018 at Candlewood. Their love of travel took them to many local areas, Ireland, and eventually they became “snowbirds” in southern Arizona. Kit passed away on May 7, 2026 in Deer Park, WA. He is survived by his wife, Sherron Park-Shultz. Services are at 2pm on June 5, 2026 at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, WA. To celebrate Kit’s vibrant life and love for the color red, we invite everyone to wear a splash of red to the service.
