Clarence ( Jim) James Chapman III

Jim was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend who passed away peacefully at home on June 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 10, 1952, in Los Angeles, California, to Cecilia Rose Smith and Clarence James Chapman Jr. Jim grew up alongside his siblings Christine, Chuck, Carol, and Craig. Jim was also close to his nephew Paul, as Paul spent a lot of his youth in and around the Chapman family home. His childhood was full of adventure — fishing, hunting, hiking, motorcycles, desert racing, off‑roading, raising animals, and being a long-time member of the YMCA with his father and brother. The stories from those early years were seemingly endless, and they remain deeply cherished by everyone who knew him. After graduating from Reseda High School. Jim went on to study Horticulture at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley, CA. Jim met the love of his life, Kathleen Joy Kelley, and they were married on May 14, 1978. Together they welcomed two children, Bonnie (1980) and Bryan (1981). Shortly after becoming parents, Jim and Kathy realized they wanted to raise their children in a rural setting. In 1981, they found their place in Eastern Washington and purchased an undeveloped piece of land near Colville — rolling up their sleeves and immediately getting to work, building and improving their new home. Jim began his career at Vaagen Brothers Lumber in 1983. During his many years there, he made lasting friendships and treasured memories. He was always grateful for how well he was treated and spoke fondly of his time with the company. Jim retired from Vaagen Brothers Lumber in 2021. After retirement, Jim enjoyed remodeling a house with his son Bryan — grateful for the chance to pass on his skills and knowledge. He also cherished every moment spent with his grandson, Collin; the two lovingly referred to each other as “Best Buddies.” Jim continued to enjoy road trips, camping, and off‑roading adventures shared with his entire family. In 2024 Jim and Kathy purchased a beautiful home on the Pend Oreille River, where Jim spent his final two years enjoying the fruits of his labor. He built his shop, kept his boat at his dock, and delighted in the peaceful river view from his living room. Even after falling ill, Jim never stopped dreaming. He continued planning for the future while still savoring the present. Though sick, he was never ready to “wave the white flag.” His determination, resilience, and devotion to his family never wavered. Jim will be remembered for his steadfast love, his hard work, and his deep dedication to those he cherished. He will be profoundly missed by his wife, children, grandson, siblings, and the many friends whose lives were brightened by his presence. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence & Cecilia Chapman. Jim is survived by his wife Kathy Chapman of Cusick, WA; children, Bonnie Hoegh (Ian) of Cu- sick, WA, Bryan Chapman of Cusick, WA; grand- child, Collin Hoegh of Cusick, WA; sisters, Chris- tine Cook (Steve) of Seminole, FL, Carol Benson (Dan) of Olympia, WA, Chuck Chapman ( Jean) of Silverado, CA, Craig Chapman of Oxnard, CA; Paul Miser of San Luis Obispo, CA; brother in-law, Patrick Kelley (Hollie) of Choctaw, OK; nieces, nephews, and extended family.
