Joseph Edwin Newbury, 86, of Chewelah, Washington, passed away on May 21, 2026, at Mount Carmel Hospital in Colville, Washington. Joe was born on February 9, 1940, in Chewelah to Bryan Arthur Newbury and Christine Ann Newbury. He grew up with deep roots in the Chewelah area, a place he loved throughout his life and later returned to after many years overseas. Joe studied education at Eastern Washington, where he graduated in 1963, and then began his teaching career in Auburn, Washington. He also served honorably in the Army National Guard of Washington, reaching the rank of Sergeant E-5 in the Signal Corps. In 1965, his career took him overseas with DoDDS, the Department of Defense Dependents Schools, where he taught in Germany and Turkey and eventually became a principal, serving first in Mannheim, Germany, and later for many years in the Heidelberg area. Joe lived a full and active life. He was a skilled skier, an avid fisherman, a huckleberry picker, a loyal friend, a lifelong car enthusiast, and a man who always had a project. He owned more than 100 vehicles over the course of his life and loved his cars, tools, shop, and home improvements. He followed politics and current events closely, read the news daily, enjoyed Gonzaga basketball, and loved sharing jokes and funny emails with friends and family. Above all, Joe was a loving father. He raised two sons, Karsten and Holger Ste- fan, and gave them a childhood full of ski trips, cars, independence, strong support, and an excellent education. He was kind, practical, independent, and always moving. Joe is survived by his sons, Karsten Newbury and Stefan Newbury; his daughter-in-law, Anja Newbury; his two grandchildren, Ava and Nicholas; and his sister, Monna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bryan and Christine Newbury, and his brother, Don Newbury. Joe’s life will be remembered at a memorial gathering in Chewelah with close family and friends on July 16th. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity of your choice.
